The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a global threat, and the introduction of sewage surveillance to detect viral genomes in sewage is being considered. However, there are challenges in the cost-effectiveness of this wastewater-based epidemiological study. In this study, we focused on antipyretic analgesics, which are frequently used during the onset of infectious diseases, and investigated methods for the analysis of acetaminophen and acetaminophen metabolites in environmental water. By optimizing the pre-treatment and analysis methods, it became possible to recover and measure target substances in river water, including impurities, and we found this to be a possible method to complement wastewater-based epidemiology.
