Auto repair sheet metal work refers to the work of repairing a damaged part without replacing any of them. Repair technicians are required to have a high level of skill and to be able to work flexibly. If the work of experts can be quantified and visualized, it may be possible to transfer the skills to non-experts in a shorter time. Thus, in this study, technicians repaired a dent made on the press line of a passenger car fender using a hammer and dolly. The purpose of the research is to analyze the working time and working process during the repair. The sheet metal repairs were classified into five steps: “Hammering” (H), “Adjustment and position check of the dolly” (D), “Check by hand” (CH), “Check by eye” (CE), and “Other” (O). It was found that experts tend to spend longer than non-experts on step D.

In this research, motion analysis was carried out to formalize the practical backing technique of experts and to impart to understanding to non-experts. When mounting a hanging scroll in Japan, three types of “washi”, Japanese paper are layered. Also, to apply those papers, wheat starch is mixed with water and heated until it is gelatinized and used as an adhesive agent. Further, to increase flexibility, wheat starch paste has been stored in a cool dark place for about 10 years. We were able to conduct a new method of three-dimensional motion analysis on traditional techniques in this research, and investigated whether this leads to better education of the non-experts. We have confirmed that results of the motion analysis that visualize the postures during the operation have had a positive influence on the non-expert.

In this study, the skill of automotive engineers in sheet metal repair is analyzed. Because no two damage situations are identical, every damage is reconsidered on a case-to-case basis, and flexible responses are required. This work requires considerable human technical skill and relies on experienced workers. When the skills depend on experience, human resource development is essential to impart such skills. The overall objective of this research is to propose a personnel training tool. The fender of an automobile was repaired by workers by a sheet metal working technique. The results showed that the experts initiated their strikes in the peripheral part of the dents. Thereafter, they applied several broad strike patterns in their repairs: for example, avoiding striking the peripheral part of the dent; striking the central part while avoiding the press line, followed by striking both the peripheral and central parts; and applying many strikes on the press line in the central part of the dent.

In Japan, there is the traditional dyeing method named "Yuzen-zome". Generally, "Yuzen-zome" can be classified into five types: hand-drawn Yuzen, kata Yuzen (i.e., dyed with paper patterns), screen printed, machine printed, and inkjet dyeing. Among them, the representative example is the hand-drawn Yuzen which whole production process is performed by handwork. In the Japanese dress industry, it is said that the workers need to spend much time, since they can evaluate many designs and values of kimono clothes. In this research, the workers of the Japanese dress industry to actually see goods, and we observed where they evaluated.

The hanging scroll is a traditional mounting format for paintings and calligraphy. The scroll must be hung straight when it is displayed, and rolled up smoothly when it is stored. For making this two function be possible, the scroll maker used wash papers and a starch paste for lining. The paste is usually diluted with a water and it cannot have the enough adhesive power. And the mounter uses the special pounding brush for getting the strong adhesiveness. In this study, an adhesive effect of the diluted paste and pounding technique will be researched with using a peeling test.

Hand lay-up fabrication has been used for forming composite structures since ancient times as it can be performed as long as the mold, skills, and materials are available. On the other hand, the hand lay-up fabrication work itself relies on human skills, which means that the finish differs according to the operator carrying out the work, the quality of the product differs among parts depending on the ease of forming, and that defects such as bubbles tend to occur easily. In this study, the experiment quantified techniques that are not visibly apparent and considered to be tacit knowledge.

The technique of making "Kana-ami" is traditional craftsmanship in Kyoto. All wire net fabrications are made by the hand work, so that it is expected that the craft man has the exquisiteness of motion. The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of motion during the weaving the wire nets with different years of experience. The subjects were three males whose have experienced wire netting craftsman for 44 years, 8 years and 0 years respectively. The working environment was reproduced in the laboratory so that the subjects might work usual like working environment as much as possible and they could concentrate on them work. The infrared reflection markers were affixed at 21 points on the body of the craftsman to analyze motion during the wire netting. And six cameras captured the position of each marker, and all markers position data which synchronized were taken in by a computer. In addition, shapes of wire net were evaluated. The shapes of tortoiseshells were evaluated by length of each side.

Kyo-wall is Japanese traditional technology creating calm and natural room atmosphere, supported by natural materials (clay, vegetable fiber and water), human skill and some kinds of trowels succeeded for more than 400years. We have found the significant flow differences of kyo-wall compound according to trowel materials with high speed VTR image analysis. In this report the f unction of the old Mizunaze trowel forged by Japanese sword technology inducing peculiar high flow of Fukakusatsuchi clay and water compound will be presented. The trowel makes smoother surface on coating and after drying than currently forged trowels. The function mechanism of trowel for water based compound will be discussed. This shows that the secret of manual processing with hand made tools for natural materials should be still alive in traditional technologies.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are composite materials with lightweight and high specific strength. As the braided CFRPs have continuous carbon-fiber bundles in their longitudinal direction, they are stronger than conventional CFRPs. In this study, we applied a current-injection-based NDE method using a HTS-SQUID gradiometer to the flat braided CFRPs with and without carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and estimated conditions of the carbon fibers while applying a step-by-step tensile load to the CFRPs. From the results, a possibility to predict an initiation site of the destruction in the braided CFRPs was demonstrated. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier B.V. A Japanese paper that is made in Saijo city is called "Saijo-Japanese paper", which is one of traditional crafts in Japan. One of the main characteristics of the Saijo-Japanese paper is a crape structure. The crape structure is made by craftsmen's hand. Weakening demand for the Saijo-Japanese paper is required to create new products by using the Saijo-Japanese paper. The illuminator using Saijo-Japanese paper is proposed as one example. However, light transmission properties of the Saijo-Japanese paper are not clarified. In this study, the crape structures and the light transmission properties of the Saijo-Japanese paper with various making condition were quantified. The light transmission properties were affected by the crape structures.
